A native freshwater species

FishBase records Channa micropeltes as native in Thailand and associates it with the Chao Phraya, Mekong and Mae Klong systems, as well as other Thai river systems. The database also uses the common name Indonesian snakehead. Thailand species record.

Different common names can refer to the same species, while “snakehead” alone may refer to more than one species. Keep a clear photograph and obtain a reliable identification before adding it to a catch log.

Choose the water before the method

A stocked commercial lake and a natural reservoir are different planning tasks. Before arranging a trip, establish the exact water, access arrangements, permitted methods and any current seasonal restrictions with the responsible operator or authority.

This profile is not a blanket statement that fishing is allowed at any river, reservoir or national-park location. A scenic photograph on this website is not an access permit or a fishing recommendation.

What a useful future technique guide needs

We will build the practical guide around a named water, a verified local source and first-hand material where available. It should explain the equipment, method, conditions, handling and limits of the advice together.

  • Identify the fish before giving species-specific handling advice.
  • Record the venue or natural water and the date.
  • Check access and current rules before recommending a method.
  • Explain why the particular tackle was chosen.
  • Keep any catch weight separate from a photographic estimate.

Until that research is ready, begin with trip preparation and the questions to ask about tackle.
